08 Jun SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR AGAINST MICE AND RATS
It is often easier to see the signs of rodent activity than to see the actual pests themselves. Here are common signs of rodents:
Droppings – This is the first sign to look out for. Rodents can deposit up to 90 droppings per day. The droppings are small, dark and scattered in areas they have been active such as in cupboards, along walls, behind appliances, in your garage or in your ceiling.
Grease Oil Markings – Grease marks and smudges are caused by mouse fur constantly brushing against walls, floors and skirtings on regular routes. You may find dark smears around holes or around corners too.
Urine Pillars – With high infestations, body grease combined with dirt and rodent urine can build up into small mounds that are up to 4cm high and 1cm wide.
Ceiling Noises – People often report hearing unusual scratching or shuffling noises during the night when mice are most active. Listen for noises between partition walls, under floorboards, in false ceilings and basements.
Rodent Nests – Mice or rats would chew on various types of material to create suitable nesting material with. These materials include fabrics, paper, cardboard and any soft material. Check behind stoves, fridges, garages, storerooms and ceilings for possible signs of these infestations as nests will contain their young.
Rodent Tracks – Rodent tracks and tail marks can show up in dusty environments such as unused lofts and basements. To check for activity, sprinkle flour, talcum powder or china clay and check for fresh tracks the next day.
