08 Feb 9 PEST MYTHS BUSTED
Myth 1: Clean homes are pest free – Although a clean home can deter pests, they are still after what we have — food, water and shelter. Many pests such as roaches and even rodents can fit through tiny cracks and crevices in search of these resources. This can happen no matter how clean your house is.
Myth 2: Mice love cheese – Mice actually prefer peanut butter, marshmallows, dried fruit and other foods high in sugar. If a rodent is hungry enough, it may nibble on cheese, but the scent would not lure a mouse.
Myth 3: Pouring boiling water on an ant hill will destroy the entire colony – This method will only eliminate the ants near the surface. Due to the fact that ants have extensive tunnels, the water will have cooled down before it reaches the queen/eggs or diffuse into the soil.
Myth 4: Mosquitos prefer certain blood types – This is untrue. Mosquitoes do not gravitate towards people because of the sweetness or type of their blood. Mosquitoes bite people because they require protein for breeding, not sugar.
Myth 5: Daddy longlegs are poisonous – Many people believe that daddy longleg spiders are poisonous and that the only reason they don’t harm humans is because their small fangs can’t penetrate our skin. In reality, daddy longlegs aren’t poisonous at all. In fact, they’re not even considered spiders because their bodies are shaped much differently, they only have one pair of eyes and they don’t have any fangs.
