12 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE FROM ABDUCTION

Crime experts have predicted that kidnapping children for ransom will become a trend in South Africa. With around 11 children taken every day for child trafficking or smuggling, it is vital that parents are well informed.

Teach your children to:

1. Know their address, and important phone number(s) off by heart.

2. Learn how and when to call the police.

3. Not to let anyone on the phone or at the door know that they are home alone.

4. To ask the closest store clerk for help and then stay where they are if they ever get lost in a mall.

5. To scream, kick, bite and fight as much as possible if they are ever grabbed by a stranger.

6. Not to talk to strangers online without parent permission.

Safety Tips for Parents:

1. Don’t leave children unattended at public places.

2. Make sure you know how to find or contact your children at all times.

3. Talk to your children about inappropriate incidences you hear on the news and get their perspective.

4. Question and monitor anyone who takes an unusual interest in your children.

5. Teach your children that they can be rude to an adult if they feel threatened in any way.

6. Keep your family computer in a central location that is easily monitored and avoid letting your children have internet access in unsupervised areas (i.e. computers in their bedrooms, etc.)
